My Role:
Project manager, designer, developer
Brief:
Many of the skills taught in the American College of Surgeons Quality Improvement Certificate Program work best in face-to-face contexts, where quality improvement teams can use discussion, team activities, and direct feedback from quality improvement leaders.
Tools:
- PowerPoint & Adobe Illustrator (storyboard, lecture slides)
- Adobe InDesign (facilitator guides, worksheets)
- Camtasia (promotional video)
The Solution:
As the lead designer and developer, I collaborated with surgical leaders in quality improvement to create a two-day workshop for the American College of Surgeons Quality and Safety Conference. As the lead designer, developer, and project manager, I created a learning experience that includes:
- Expert lectures: I authored quality improvement lectures in collaboration with surgical leaders in quality improvement and storyboarded PowerPoint slides, which were developed in collaboration with our team’s graphic designer.
- Gamified learning: Games reinforced concepts related to data analysis and resource allocation.
- Hybrid learning: Attendees continued their learning by completing a digital, self-paced learning experience after the workshop, earning their certification in the quality improvement basics.
Collaborators:
- Graphic Designer
- Instructional Design Manager
- Dr. Lillian Kao, Division Chief, Acute Care Surgery at UT Health Houston
- Dr. Peter Learn, System Division Chief of Surgical Oncology at Inova Health System
- Dr. Mehul Raval, Division Head of Pediatric Surgery at Lurie Children’s Hospital
- Dr. Rachel Kelz, William Maul Measey Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania
- Dr. Caroline Reinke, Associate Professor of Surgery at Atrium Health Myers Park
Evaluation Plan:
This instructor-led learning experience is part of an alternative hybrid path for learners to complete the ACS Quality Improvement Certification Program. Please see the Evaluation Plan for the whole program.
Results:
- The workshop has been a popular offering at the conference from 2022 until present, attracting 100+ attendees every year.
- It is slated to return for the 2025 ACS Quality and Safety Conference.
- This workshop earns the College an average $30k in revenue annually.
